Addressing subjective responses
to cancer
Janet de Groot, MD, FRCPC
Psychologic responses to a cancer diagnosis
and treatment are contingent on the affected individuals
subjective appraisal of the events. Responses to the illness
and its treatment range from posttraumatic stress syndromes
to posttraumatic growth, defined as significant positive
change arising from the struggle with a major life crisis.1
