In Brief
Already
known
Nurses have
a prominent role in the identification and
management of cancer-related pain, including
BTCP.
What this
study showed
Only 22% nurses
were extremely confident in discussing BTCP
with patients.
Fear of addiction
is the topic least frequently discussed between
nurses and patients even though it is perceived
to be the main reason for nonadherence to
BTCP medication.
Next steps
Develop studies
that identify perceived barriers and facilitators
of professional-patient communication about
the fear of addiction to pain medication and
projects that design and test interventions
to facilitate such communication.
Develop professional
education on the management of BTCP.
Conduct similar
surveys with other oncology healthcare professionals
about the management of BTCP.
